HHNK blows up what is unfairly flushed down the toilet
At the three largest sewage treatment plants, we catch an average of about 8,000 pounds of waste per month. Moist wipes, frying fat, sanitary napkins and condoms don't belong in the sewer, and yet we still find them. To reduce these pounds of waste, this month we're blowing up everything you flush down the sink or toilet that doesn't belong there: unflushables.
With giant, eye-catching blow-up versions of sanitary towels, wet wipes, deep-frying fat and condoms, we are drawing the attention of Gen Z (18-25 year olds) to what does not belong in the sewer. Research shows that water awareness among this target group is low. This young generation is moving towards independence, a good time to increase their awareness and to help them make the right choices. By using these 'unflushables' to make visible what is being flushed down the toilet and sink unjustly, we hope to encourage this generation to make different choices. The unflushables do not belong in the sewer and can cause blockages in the sewer system. Fixing these clogs incurs additional costs. Throughout September, we can be found where young people are: online.
The Unflushables
For the large amount of waste captured at treatment plants, of course, everyone is responsible. You can also contribute at home and be keen on the unflushables:
- Flush only the 3-P's down your toilet, poop, peeand toilet paper.
- Don't throw junk like grease, wet wipes, tampons and condoms down the toilet but throw it in the trash.
- Also, do not flush out Household Hazardous Waste (such as medicines, oil, turpentine and paint), but submit it separately.
Pay close attention to anything you flush down the sink or toilet that doesn't belong there. So don't flush the Unflushables!
