CO2 performance ladder

As a sustainable organization, HHNK works with theCO2 performance ladder of the Foundation for Climate Friendly Procurement & Business (SKAO). On the one hand, this means that we reward companies that take the reduction ofCO2 seriously in a tender with a fictitious discount on the tender price. On the other hand, HHNK also applies theCO2 performance ladder to its own organization, by taking measures to reduce the emissions we cause ourselves.

Purchasing and theCO2 performance ladder

TheCO2 performance ladder is an instrument that helps companies reduceCO2. HHNK has been applying this tool for several years in tenders in the GWW sector, where we award contracts based on the best price-quality ratio.

HHNK rewards the ambition level of tenderers in a tendering procedure with a tender advantage: a notional discount on the tender price. A tenderer expresses his level of ambition in a step on theCO2 performance ladder. The higher the step (there are a maximum of 5 steps), the higher the tender advantage. HHNK determines in the tender documents how much fictitious advantage can be earned per step.

In market segments where theCO2 performance ladderis still unknown, we do not immediately set the bar at the highest step (step 5), but start with step 3, which is seen as the entry level. However, we will gradually raise the ambition level to the highest step.

In the Climate and Energy Program, HHNK expressed the ambition to be energy neutral and emission neutral by 2025. TheCO2 performance ladder helps us work towards these goals in a structured way and has four perspectives:

  • Provide insight intoCO2 emissions, by properly monitoring energy consumption. Based on energy consumption, HHNK produces aCO2 footprint every six months.
  • Identifying measures to reduceCO2 emissions. These are assessed for effectiveness every six months.
  • Make known through communication internally and externally what HHNK'sCO2 emissions are and what measures are being taken to reduce them.
  • Participate through participation in initiatives aroundCO2 reduction in the industry or beyond.

HHNK was the first water board in the Netherlands to be certified for theCO2 performance ladder(step 3). View the documents below about our goals andCO2 reduction policy.

On the SKAO website you will find more information about theCO2 Performance Ladderand a Practical Guide describing how an organization can reach Step 3 of the ladder.
