What does HHNK do?

Every day, we work to protect the land against water, flooding, and water shortages, to ensure clean and healthy surface water, and to maintain safe roads and waterways. We do this in North Holland, above the North Sea Canal: Hollands Noorderkwartier.

Collaboration

We work closely with other agencies involved in water management. These include Rijkswaterstaat, the Province of North Holland, municipalities, and the drinking water company. We also regularly meet with associations representing farmers, entrepreneurs, residents, anglers, skaters, nature conservationists, and others. We try to take everyone's interests into account, but the public interest (safety) always comes first.

  • Water safety

Strong dikes and dunes protect the inhabitants of Hollands Noorderkwartier from flooding.

  • Limiting water damage

To prevent flooding, we are constructing water storage facilities and improving drainage options.

  • Preventing water shortages

We speak of water scarcity when there is less water than we need for agriculture and nature.

  • Healthy water

By healthy water, we mean surface water with the right balance in terms of ecology and (nutritional) substances.

  • Clean water

Every day, the 1.4 million inhabitants of our region produce more than 120 litre per person.

  • Safe (water)ways

In the municipalities of Purmerend and Waterland, we are responsible for the management and maintenance of (polder) roads.

  • Crisis management

Emergencies can never be ruled out. Additional manpower, machines, and equipment are on standby.

  • Management and organization

This includes matters such as communication, innovation, sustainability, information security, and personnel policy.
