What does HHNK do?

Every day we work to protect the country from water, from flooding and water shortage, for clean and healthy surface water and for safe (navigable) roads. We do this in North Holland above the North Sea Canal: Hollands Noorderkwartier.

Collaboration

We work closely with other agencies related to water. For example, with the Department of Public Works, the Province of North Holland, municipalities and the drinking water company. In addition, we often sit around the table with associations of farmers, entrepreneurs, residents, sport fishermen, skaters, nature managers, and so on. We try to take everyone's interests into account, but the public interest (safety) always comes first.

  • Water safety

Strong dikes and dunes protect residents of Hollands Noorderkwartier from flooding.

  • Reducing flooding

To prevent flooding, we construct water storage areas and improve drainage facilities.

  • Preventing water shortage

We speak of water shortage when there is less water than we need for agriculture and nature.

  • Healthy water

By healthy water, we mean surface water with the right balance in terms of ecology and (nutrient) substances.

  • Clean water

Every day, the 1.4 million residents of our area produce over 120 gallons of wastewater per person.

  • Safe (navigable) roads

We have traditionally provided management and maintenance of (polder) roads in part of our work area.

  • Crisis Management

Calamities can never be ruled out. Extra manpower, machinery and equipment are on standby.

  • Governance and organization

This includes issues such as communication, innovation, sustainability, information security and human resources.
