Safe (water)ways

We have traditionally been responsible for the management and maintenance of dike and polder roads in part of our working area. Only the oldest water boards manage public roads. These are the water boards in the 'low-lying' provinces of North Holland, South Holland, Utrecht, and Zeeland. We also manage waterways, bridges, and locks.
Transfer to municipalities
Road management is not one of the water board's core tasks. We therefore want to divest ourselves of this task and transfer responsibility for the roads to the municipalities. We are pressing ahead with this process and have now transferred road management to 21 of the 23 municipalities. When it comes to the management and maintenance of roads that have not yet been transferred, road safety is the highest priority for HHNK.
What does HHNK do?

We manage another 214kilometre roads in the municipalities of Purmerend and Waterland, mainly outside built-up areas. These roads are owned by HHNK. Roads within built-up areas are generally the responsibility of the municipality. Our activities are aimed at designing roads in such a way that they encourage safe use.
This also includes, for example, combating slippery conditions in winter. In addition, we maintain 100 kilometre for the Province and operate 28 locks and bridges.
