Ready for water
Ready for water together!
Rain, wind, storms; autumn is a turbulent season. Sometimes it also brings flooding or, in the worst case, severe flooding. We limit the risk of this happening by strengthening, maintaining, and inspecting our dunes and dikes, among other things. Do you want to be prepared for flooding at home? It's easier than you think. We'll help you get started with a few tips. That way, we'll be ready for flooding together!
What do we do?
The storm season lasts from October 15 to April 15. This is a period that often sees heavy rain and storms. Both in preparation for and during this season, we work hard to limit water damage and flooding. Through dredging, mowing, and annual inspections, we ensure that waterways remain wide enough, are clean, and that water flows and drains properly. We set up storage areas to temporarily store excess rainwater. And we reinforce, maintain, and inspect our dikes and dunes.
What can you do?
You can also do something in and around your home to prevent flooding or be prepared for it.

I experienced the Tuindorp Oostzaan flood in 1960. I was four years old at the time. I remember standing on the balcony of our house, above my father's shop, and seeing the water rise very quickly. It was a terrible experience. If the dike here in Hoorn breaks, the water will rise very high in our area too. So it's good that the dike has been reinforced."
