Collection and disposal of water

Through the supply and discharge and temporary storage of water, we regulate water levels. With the Water Programme we provide basic protection against flooding. Despite these efforts, flooding is occurring with increasing frequency. 

To prevent flooding, we design areas to collect water, hold water longer in places where this is possible, and improve the possibilities for the drainage of water. We do not do this alone, but together with the province, municipalities, agricultural and nature organizations, recreation boards, residents and farmers.

  • Level decisions

    For each area, we set the ideal water level in an integral level decision. 

  • Ditch maintenance

    If your plot borders a ditch, you have a duty to maintain it.

  • Fireplace

    During the inspection, we check that you have done ditch maintenance properly.

  • Dredging

    Dredging is necessary for water flow and drainage as well as for water quality.

  • Consideration of water interests in spatial plans (water test)

    Spatial plans must actively consider water interests. In most cases, the plan must include a water paragraph.

  • Spatial adaptation

    HHNK is working with municipalities, the province and PWN to make and keep Hollands Noorderkwartier climate-proof.

    Responding to climate change requires redesigning the living environment.

  • Groundwater

    When it rains, some of the water sinks into the ground. It then flows slowly through the soil into a ditch.
