Water collection and drainage

We regulate the water level by supplying, discharging, and temporarily storing water. With the programme , we provide basic protection against flooding. Despite these efforts, flooding is becoming increasingly common. 

To prevent flooding, we are creating areas for water retention, retaining water for longer in places where this is possible, and improving water drainage options. We are not doing this alone, but in collaboration with the province, municipalities, agricultural and nature organizations, recreation boards, residents, and farmers.

  • Level decisions

    For each area, we determine the ideal water level in an integrated water level decision. 

  • Mowing

    We mow dikes for water safety, roadside verges for traffic safety, and watercourses to prevent water shortages and flooding.

  • Ditch maintenance

    If your plot borders a ditch, you are obliged to maintain it.

  • Fireplace

    During the inspection, we check whether you have carried out the ditch maintenance properly.

  • Dredging

    Dredging is necessary for water flow and drainage, as well as for water quality.

  • Weighting of water interests in spatial plans (water assessment)

    Water interests must be actively taken into account in spatial plans. In most cases, the plan must include a section on water.

  • Spatial adaptation

    HHNK is working with municipalities, the province, and PWN to make and keep Hollands Noorderkwartier climate-proof.

  • Groundwater

    When it rains, some of the water sinks into the ground. It then slowly flows through the soil to a ditch.
