Ditch maintenance
If your plot borders a ditch, you are obliged to maintain it. This means that you must keep the ditch at the specified width and depth. During the autumn inspection, the dredging inspection, and the bottleneck inspection, we check whether you have carried out the ditch maintenance properly.
Terms and Conditions
The rules for the maintenance of ditches and associated structures (such as culverts, bridges, weirs, and dams) are laid down in the Maintenance Ordinance. TheLegger Wateren(Water Register) specifies where the ordinance applies. It states the minimum dimensions (width and depth) that ditches must be maintained to and by whom.
How it works
A ditch is well maintained if:
- the ditch is free of bulky waste, litter, and floating debris;
- reeds and aquatic plants do not obstruct the water supply and drainage of the ditch;
- the walkways are in good condition;
- the revetments are well maintained;
- the structures (such as culverts, bridges, weirs, and dams) are clean and in good condition. The owner or interested party of the structure is responsible for maintaining the ditch up to 3.0 metre either side of the structure. This also applies to the side of the public road;
- the trees and plants above the water surface are pruned to at least 3.0 metre the waterline.
In addition to good water supply and drainage, water quality and ecology are also important. Where possible, nature is given space. In a ditch, 5% of the aquatic plants may remain on each side. For example, in a ditch 4 metre , 20 cm of vegetation may remain on both sides. Aquatic plants contribute to healthy water quality and ensure a sturdy bank. Leaving this edge in place prevents bank erosion.
