Putting together a water watch
Climate change is causing increasingly heavy rainfall. Because of these heavy rainstorms, there is also a greater chance of flooding. This may call for measures to better protect your home from flooding. One of these measures is using a water watch.
What does water watch mean?
Water watch means that you and your neighbors, street or neighborhood use a means of communication to help each other. This can be done, for example, by using a WhatsApp group. When there is a heavy downpour and you yourself are not at home you can call on your neighbors to take measures at your house. Think of measures that are easy to implement. Such as placing a bulkhead or sandbags, closing shutters or shutting off drains.
Cost
There is no cost to form a water watch with your neighbors. The water watch ensures that flood control measures are taken at the right time. The preventive means, such as bulkheads or sandbags, have already been purchased.
What do you need.
Neighbors who want to help you do this, a communication tool such as a WhatsApp group and measures that are easy to implement.
Tips
A water watch requires good rapport and clear communication with your neighbors. Make good agreements with each other. Clearly agree when to call each other in and what you expect from each other. Are you expecting bad weather? Keep a close eye on the forecast and notify each other in time.
