ENDURE - ENsuring DUne REsilience against climate change
ENDURE aims to improve insights to take a sustainable and cost-effective approach to managing the coastline of the two seas, and to create a natural and dynamic coast that is resilient to erosion, flooding and sea level rise(http://www.endure.eu.com/).
Name of grant program
Interreg 2 Seas 2014-2020 is a European territorial cooperation program for England, France, the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders). The Program is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and has a total budget of €241 million. The overall objective is to develop an innovative, knowledge- and research-based, sustainable and inclusive 2 Seas region, where natural resources are protected and the green economy is promoted.
Project objectives
The ENDURE project focuses on knowledge sharing between the partners, with some fifteen organizations also participating as 'observers' and thus watching the developments within the ENDURE project. The project will bring tangible benefits to 110 km of coastline and 3302ha of dune landscape through the application of 6 new ecosystem-based dune management techniques. Key project deliverables include the installation of nets that trap sand to strengthen dunes, the development of mussel farms to combat erosion and a mapping tool to visualize the benefits of different dune management techniques (hard engineering versus ecosystem-based engineering.
Location
HHNK's activities take place in the Kop van Noord-Holland region.
Partners
The project has six partners from four different member states (UK, France, Belgium and the Netherlands):
- Norfolk County Council (UK)
- Ministry of Mobility and Public Works (BE).
- Ghent University (BE)
- Permanent Center for Environmental Initiatives (FR)
- Center for studies and expertise on mobility and environmental planning risks (FR)
- Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier (NL).
All parties are jointly working on coastal climate adaptations that increase the resilience of dunes, reduce damage from flooding and erosion, and save costs compared to hard engineering solutions.

Budget
The total budget for the project is € 2.1 million. The contribution from HHNK is € 230,000. The Province of North Holland is subsidizing € 35,000 and Europe (Interreg) € 138,000.
Duration of the project
The project started on Jan. 1, 2018, and is expected to run through Dec. 31, 2020.
