Bicycle routes

Hop on your bike and experience the stories of the Purmer. To mark 400 years of the Purmer (2022), two cycling routes have been created: one of 17 km through the northern part and one of 15 km through the southern part of the polder. Both routes start at the Purmerenderweg-Westerweg intersection near the Purmerkerk and can easily be combined.

With the brochure in hand, the bike ride becomes an interesting journey through the history of Purmer! Read about the reclamation of the Purmermeer using polder mills in the first quarter of the seventeenth century. Discover the locations where the beautiful country estates of Ilpenstein Castle and Wolffenhoeck once stood. And learn all about the De Purmer and De Verwachting cheese factories, where farmers brought their milk in the twentieth century.

A printable compact version of the routes can be downloaded below. A comprehensive digital version is available on theWaterlands Archive website.
