Municipality of Edam-Volendam: Revitalization of the Old Town Center
The municipality of Edam-Volendam is going to revitalize part of the old village center in Volendam (Oude Kom). To prevent flooding caused by precipitation, a water-retaining foundation layer will be installed under the road and on top of water-permeable paving. This will be carried out in combination with water retention on the street (raised sidewalks). There is approximately 13,500m² of paving within the project area. The municipality is making every effort to make all existing roadways and parking spaces (a total of 5,500 m²) more climate-proof. This involves installing a water-retaining foundation layer with 315 m³ of water storage, in combination with water storage on the street, which is made possible by the use of approximately 12 cm high kerbs along the roadways and parking spaces. Edam-Volendam will start this project in the second quarter of 2025. It will take approximately one year to complete. The total cost of the work is €307,800. Of this, the municipality will receive €92,340 from the KAN scheme.
