Municipality of Heemskerk: Water storage Heemskerkse Watertuinen

We have awarded the municipality of Heemskerk a €75,000 subsidy for the construction of the Kleine Houtweg water storage facility, which has been named Heemskerkse Watertuinen. This is one of eight projects to which HHNK is awarding subsidies under the KAN scheme.

Through this Climate Active Noorderkwartier subsidy regulation, municipalities can receive up to 30% of the project costs as a subsidy for projects that make the living environment more climate-proof. The scheme is intended to accelerate the implementation of these projects. On February 21, water board member Klazien Hartog symbolically handed over this amount to alderman Ani Zalinyan of the municipality of Heemskerk.

Flooding

Alderman Ani Zalinyan: "We are very pleased with this contribution from HHNK. The aim of the Water Gardens project is to reduce flooding in the horticultural area caused by heavy rainfall. We are combining the construction of this climate-proof water storage facility with the creation of a beautiful nature reserve, where you can enjoy walking and recreation. In addition, we are enhancing biodiversity by planting plenty of native plants and shrubs. The Water Gardens will truly enrich Heemskerk."

The work consists of digging a water storage area with shallow pools, installing new weirs, installing pipes for water drainage, planting new trees and plants, and expanding recreational opportunities by means of walking paths, play elements, and benches. The project will be completed in the spring. The total cost of the project is €350,000, of which HHNK is contributing €75,000 from the KAN subsidy scheme.
