Municipality of Schagen: Hockey Water Field with Water Buffer

We have awarded the municipality of Schagen a €100,000 subsidy for climate adaptation measures in the Hockey water field with water buffer project. This is one of six projects to which HHNK has awarded subsidies from the KAN scheme.

Through this Climate Active Noorderkwartier subsidy regulation, municipalities can receive subsidies for projects that make the living environment more climate-proof, up to 30% of the project costs. The scheme is intended to accelerate the implementation of these projects. On October 12, 2023, water board member Klazien Hartog symbolically handed over this amount to alderman Hans Heddes of the municipality of Schagen.

Alderman Hans Heddes explains: "We are very pleased that the subsidy has enabled us to make the hockey water field climate-adaptive. Underneath the field, there is a water buffer with a total capacity of 1,700m3. This buffer is intended to absorb peak rainfall, which will occur more frequently in the future. The water from the water buffer is drained slowly, giving the pumping stations more time to drain the water. In the future, the buildings at the sports park will also drain rainwater into the water buffer."

The municipality of Schagen used the subsidy to construct a hockey water field with a water buffer at Sportpark Groenoord on Wilgenlaan. The existing artificial turf hockey field has been converted into a water-based artificial turf field. Underneath the field is a water buffer made of plastic crates. The water buffer supplies the irrigation for the water-based field. A new clubhouse has also been built with toilets that flush with rainwater. The project will be completed in mid-September 2023. The total cost of this innovative project is €439,245.88, of which HHNK is contributing €100,000 from the KAN scheme.
