Municipality of Zaanstad: 14 climate-proof schoolyards
We have awarded the municipality of Zaanstad a €21,000 grant for the construction of 14 climate-proof school playgrounds in Zaanstad. This is one of eight projects that HHNK is subsidizing under the KAN scheme.
Through this Climate Active Noorderkwartier subsidy regulation, municipalities can receive up to 30% of the project costs for projects that make the living environment more climate-proof. The scheme is intended to accelerate the implementation of these projects. On March 7, water board member Klazien Hartog symbolically handed over this amount to aldermen Breunesse and Groothuismink of the municipality of Zaanstad.
60 schoolyards
Alderman Wessel Breunesse (public space and climate adaptation): "We are very pleased with this contribution from the water board. Last year, we started greening our schoolyards in the Zaan region. We support school boards in this endeavor and, since this year, we have also been a municipal ambassador. Green schoolyards are climate-adaptive and provide a pleasant and healthy learning and playing environment for children. With this contribution, we can make even more schoolyards greener."
Alderman Natasja Groothuismink (education): "Together with primary schools in Zaanstad and other regional parties, the municipality of Zaanstad has set itself the goal of greening 60 primary school playgrounds throughout Zaanstad within ten years. Playing outside in nature stimulates the imagination and makes children more creative in their play. Schools can also use the playground for math, language, or nature lessons."
