Haukesschutsluis to be closed starting October 16
Research shows that the technical infrastructure of the Haukesschutsluis lock at De Haukes is outdated and in need of replacement. As a result, the lock can no longer be operated in a responsible and safe manner for maritime traffic. Therefore, the lock will be closed as of October 16, 2026.
Impact on Shipping
Starting October 16, it will no longer be possible to navigate between the Amstelmeer and the Wieringermeer via the Haukesschutsluis. Recreational boaters and other waterway users must take an alternative route. For many users, this means a longer boat trip.
The Future of the Lock
The Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board (HHNK), the province of North Holland, and the municipality of Hollands Kroon have jointly explored the possibilities for the lock’s future. This process has identified two options:
- renovation of the lock;
- Permanent closure and historical preservation of the lock.
Research on Renovation
The municipality of Hollands Kroon considers it important that the waterway’s navigational function be preserved. The Haukesschut Lock is a key link in the recreational waterway network and helps make the area accessible to water sports enthusiasts and recreational users.
For this reason, HHNK, the province of North Holland, and the municipality of Hollands Kroon are further exploring the renovation option. In doing so, they are examining the technical feasibility, safety, costs, available subsidy options, and future responsibility for management and maintenance. The first step is for the municipality to draw up a plan that substantiates the societal costs and benefits of keeping the lock open for water recreation. This plan will be presented in early 2027.

No final decision has yet been made regarding the future of the Haukesschutsluis. In the coming period, the parties involved will further develop the renovation plan. The challenge of ensuring that the lock eventually meets current requirements also remains. This can be achieved through renovation or permanent closure. To avoid incurring costs that may not be necessary, a decision on the lock’s future will be made first.
Based on the results, the parties involved will decide how to proceed with the lock. As soon as there is more clarity on this matter, we will inform residents, recreational users, and other stakeholders.
