Outdoor work: a glimpse of the Water Challenge

Below are some photos of the “Zijpe and Hazepolder Water System Improvement” project. The goal of this project is to replace culverts in order to increase water flow. The project was initiated in response to the extreme rainfall during the weekend of June 18–20, 2021. In many places, the water in the waterways rose to ground level and remained standing among the crops in the fields. The flooding situation was most severe in Callantsoog, the Zijpe, the Sammerspolder, the Baafjespolder, and Egmondermeer.

Replacing several culverts along the Zijperdijk will improve the system’s ability to handle heavy rainfall. While this will not prevent flooding, it can help mitigate its effects.
