HHNK blows away what doesn't belong in the toilet
This summer, we’re using giant, eye-catching inflatable versions of trash to raise awareness about what doesn’t belong in the sewer system. Trash such as wet wipes and grease—known as “Unflushables”—cause clogs and lead to malfunctions in pumps and equipment at the water authority. The message is simple: take care of water, and water will take care of you.
During the months of June, July, and August, HHNK aims to reach young people between the ages of 18 and 25 with this campaign. By raising their awareness of the consequences, HHNK hopes to reduce the amount of waste in the sewer system. Anything you flush that shouldn’t be flushed affects the sewer system. The message is clear: Don’t flush the Unflushables.
Water Board Member Marjan Leijen explains: “Many products seem harmless to flush down the toilet, but they’re not. For example, wet wipes don’t break down quickly enough, and grease clumps together and sticks to the pipes. These ‘Unflushables’ don’t just disappear; they get stuck in the sewer system and cause problems in wastewater drainage and at the wastewater treatment plant. This makes treating wastewater unnecessarily more complex and expensive.”
Just the 3 Ps
By being mindful of what you flush down the toilet, you can help prevent clogs and pollution. That is why HHNK urges you to:
- Only flush the three Ps down the toilet: poop, pee, and toilet paper
- Dispose of wet wipes, sanitary pads, and condoms in the trash can
- Do not pour cooking oil down the drain; instead, dispose of it separately
