HHNK remains alert to ongoing drought in Hollands Noorderkwartier

It has been dry and sunny for weeks in the Netherlands, with occasional showers. Despite the rain, the precipitation deficit in our area remains high. This is the difference between expected evaporation and measured precipitation. Therefore, we remain alert for drought. Our employees in the field keep a close eye on whether drought causes damage to dikes. We adjust the water level in ditches and lakes where necessary and possible. Thanks to the water supply from the IJsselmeer and Markermeer lakes, there is currently sufficient fresh water available in our area.

Dike inspections

In early July, the precipitation deficit in our area reached 175 mm. As soon as there is a significant precipitation deficit (from 225 mm), our inspectors go out to check drought-prone dikes. In a full inspection, 65 kilometers of dikes are inspected by employees, including with the help of drones. In this way, cracks in dikes are identified and addressed in time. This is how we ensure safe dikes and keep residents dry feet.

Water supply

During the hot summer period, residents and businesses typically use more water, rain less and water evaporates faster. Agricultural and horticultural companies irrigate their crops with ditch water in some places in our area.To respond to the situation, we keep a close eye on the water level.

Water is brought into our area from the IJsselmeer and Markermeer lakes. Rijkswaterstaat ensures that the water level in the IJsselmeer and Markermeer lakes remains high enough so that sufficient water can be supplied to our area. The water supply is currently sufficient to meet the higher demand for water.
