HHNK is planting 50 trees on Earth Day

In 2009, at the initiative of Bolivian President Evo Morales, the United Nations designated April 22 as the International Day of Mother Earth.

The resolution refers to “the Earth and its ecosystems as our home” and “harmony with nature and the Earth” as a challenge for humanity. On this Earth Day, HHNK is taking a moment to reflect on this.

“Nature does the work”

Like no other organization, we are experiencing the effects of climate change—caused by excessive greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. On April 22, Earth Day, we’re drawing attention to this issue with a small initiative. Water Board Member Jos Beemsterboer: “We’re going to plant 50 trees—25 in the Netherlands and 25 elsewhere. Trees store CO2 and can cool the air by up to 10 degrees on hot days. And the more trees there are, the more space there is for plants, insects, birds, and other animals. Nature does the work!”

Trees for All

The Trees for All Foundation is responsible for planting the trees, and this organization is making significant strides. Since 1999, 14.5 million trees and shrubs have been planted in the Netherlands and abroad. Trees for All has facilitated 176 global forest projects, sequestered over 1 million tons of CO2 through certified projects, and collaborates with 2,209 companies. HHNK is one of them. And while 50 trees may seem modest, when you add up all the small contributions, it really adds up to a lot.
