HHNK trial 'catches' plastic from water
On Friday, May 16, Water Board member Klazien Hartog will open the so-called CirCleaner at De Helsdeur pumping station. This plastic-capture system prevents plastic from entering the sea via the water system.
Every year, 12.5 million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean. This damages the water system and causes surface water pollution. Much of this plastic enters the sea from the mainland water system. The Water Board is working internationally to reduce plastic pollution and develop knowledge.
Less pollution

Fifteen parties from France, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands are investigating in the European project TREASURE how pollution is caused in the North Sea and how it can be reduced or prevented. These countries are looking for effective and structural solutions to remove and prevent pollution. From this cooperation, the water boards are taking an international approach. HHNK is participating in this project from the Netherlands with the CirCleaner, making its first contribution.
Research behavior plastic particles
The CirCleaner is the result of the 2016 competition Stop Plastic! by winner Rinze de Vries with his later company Noria. This is a Delft-based company in the field of urban plastic soup. In recent years, De Vries has further developed the initial idea into a workable application. During the project, it will be investigated how much plastic flows through the waterway and how much the CirCleaner captures. HHNK shares the knowledge gained with all international partners. In this way, a scientific basis for reducing plastic in waters is being developed.
