HHNK strengthens dike and extends bike path in Purmerend and Ilpendam
We started late last year to reinforce the Oudelandsdijkje, which connects the Gors and Vurige Staart polders in Purmerend with Ilpendam. The bicycle path on this dike will also be widened in a collaboration between HHNK, Purmerend municipality, Waterland municipality and Transport Region Amsterdam. In addition, a footpath will be constructed. Today, administrators from all parties came together to reflect on this special collaboration.
The bike path will be widened to 3 meters and a 1.2-meter sidewalk will be added. This will provide better separation of pedestrians and cyclists and make the area safer and more accessible for different users. The total length of the bike path widening is about 3 kilometers. The northern portion of the bike path, about 700 meters, will not be widened, but will receive new surfacing and lineation for improved safety and durability.
The widening of the bike path will be carried out simultaneously with the dike reinforcement. Work began in October 2024 and will be completed in September 2025. Residents of the area can then once again safely live, work and recreate below sea level and benefit from the improved bicycle and walking connection.
