What does the coming period look like?
Now that the engineering firm is on board, we can get started at full speed. The year 2024 will therefore involve intensive collaboration with both the engineering firm and the various stakeholders. In the exploratory phase, we will investigate possible solutions, which will then be developed in detail into promising alternatives. From a number of promising alternatives, one most suitable solution will emerge, known as the preferred alternative (PA). This PA will be selected on the basis of various criteria, such as cost, sustainability, and public support. The PA is expected to be finalized in January 2025.
The preliminary study has already identified a concrete solution for one of the dike sections near Nieuwe Diep. For Nieuwe Diep I and II, a quay widening is now being considered, which will create extra quay space and also solve the water safety issue. To this end, we are working closely with the municipality of Den Helder, the Port of Den Helder, and the Maritime Cluster. Simultaneously with the adoption of the VKA, a cooperation agreement (SOK) will also be ratified, so that agreements can be made about wishes, requirements, management and maintenance, and costs.
