Coastal Information Center, Sand against Sea

Information center Coast, Sand against Sea closes doors

Our Coast, Sand Against Sea Information Center is finally closing its doors. Since its opening in 2014, the information center has welcomed more than 150,000 visitors. On Oct. 25, we said goodbye to the faces of the information center, Tonny Veerman, Dorien Partiman and Elma Verhoef. With great enthusiasm they welcomed the many thousands of local, regional and (inter)national visitors and told them about the special coastal reinforcement between Petten and Camperduin.

The Coastal Information Center opened its doors to the public in April 2014. The occasion was the coastal reinforcement project Kust op Kracht: reinforcing the coast with sand between Petten and Camperduin. Visitors could learn about the project and its progress through the interactive exhibition Sand against the Sea.

The information center remained open for several years after the project was completed. The renewed exhibition focused on the development of the newly created landscape: the Hondsbossche Dunes. By now, many have discovered the new wide beach and the beautiful biking and hiking trails, and the time has come to close the doors. Until a new use is found for the building, the Surf Therapy Foundation is using it to do their good work.

Hiking trails

The North Holland Walking Network has set out four beautiful walks around Petten:

  • The red route (7.9 km) crosses the imposing Hondsbossche Dunes and the Old Schoorl Sea Dike. This grassy dike winds around the bird-rich Abbotskolk, remnant of a breach in 1570.
  • The orange route (4.2 km) turns off on the unpaved Hazedijk, ring dike of the Hazepolder.
  • The blue route (5.8 km) passes our Coastal Infocentre. Then quite a bit of beach and back over shell paths and through the wet dune valleys of Het Korfwater.
  • The green route (4.3 km) takes the Spreeuwendijk through the forested Pettemerduinen of the Forestry Commission. Back over the Zijperzeedijk.
