Coastal Information Center, Sand Against the Sea

Coastal Information Center, Sand Against Sea closes its doors

Our Coastal Information Center, Sand Against Sea, is closing its doors for good. Since opening in 2014, the information center has welcomed more than 150,000 visitors. On October 25, we said goodbye to the faces of the information center, Tonny Veerman, Dorien Partiman, and Elma Verhoef. They enthusiastically welcomed thousands of local, regional, and (inter)national visitors and told them about the special coastal reinforcement between Petten and Camperduin.

The Coastal Information Center opened its doors to the public in April 2014. The reason for this was the coastal reinforcement project Kust op Kracht (Coastal Strength): reinforcing the coast with sand between Petten and Camperduin. Visitors could learn about the project and its progress through the interactive exhibitionZand tegen Zee(Sand against Sea).

The information center remained open for several years after the project was completed. The renovated exhibition focused on the development of the newly created landscape: the Hondsbossche Duinen. Many people have now discovered the new wide beach and the beautiful cycling and walking paths, and the time has come to close the doors. Until a new use is found for the building, the Surf Therapy Foundation will use it to carry out its good work.

Hiking trails

TheNorth Holland Walking Networkhas mapped out four beautiful walks in the Petten area:

  • The red route (7.9 km) takes you across the impressive Hondsbossche Dunes and the Oude Schoorlse Zeedijk. This grass dike winds around the bird-rich Abtskolk, the remnant of a breach in 1570.
  • The orange route (4.2 km) turns off onto the unpaved Hazedijk, the ring dike of the Hazepolder.
  • The blue route (5.8 km) runs past our Coastal Information Center. Then it continues along a long stretch of beach and back along shell paths and through the wet dune valleys of Het Korfwater.
  • The green route (4.3 km) leads via the Spreeuwendijk through the wooded Pettemerduinen dunes managed by Staatsbosbeheer. Return via the Zijperzeedijk.

This bike ride takes you along the new bike path past the Hondsbossche Duinen to the hinterland, a landscape of sleepy dikes and beautiful dune ridges. The route tells you about new coastal defenses, fresh and salt water, flooding, and old sea defenses.
