Embankment improvement Eilandspolder

The levees around the Eilandspolder were tested by HHNK in 2018/2019. In 2020, preparations for the improvement design of the dikes began. After doing more research, it turns out that about 8.5 kilometers do not meet safety standards.

To bring safety up to standard, soil additions will be made on top of the dike and on the inner berms at most locations. Custom solutions will be implemented at a number of locations. All these measures are in keeping with the original appearance of the area.

What will happen?

The Map below shows where we will perform levee reinforcements in the Island Polder. These are further explained in the text below the Map.

Quay section 1

For the dike at De Rijp/Oost-Grafdijk (at Zuiddijk/Kamerhop) we are adding soil to the inner slope and to the inner shoulder. We will partially relocate the toe ditch so that soil replenishment of the inner verge will be possible.

Quay section 3.1+3.2

At West Graftdijk the dike between the road and the inlet water will be raised at the level of the Kanaaldijk. At Noorderstraat, a small section of the current dike will be raised. Finally, at Oudelandsdijkje a small piece of soil will be added to the inner shoulder.

Quay section 4.5f

In Driehuizen, the existing dike between the homes and the basin water is being raised. Customized solutions were designed for this and discussed with the residents.

Quay section 5.1 and 5.2

In the rural area west of Grootschermer, the dike will be raised. In the village of Grootschermer near Noordeinde, a narrow edge of the basin water will be filled in to make room for the raising and widening of the dike. In cooperation with Landschap Noord-Holland, HHNK is compensating for the damming by creating a pool/wetland area from a nearby dry reed island. This will stimulate nature development at the site. At the Haviksdijkje on the west side of Grootschermer, the existing concrete structure will be raised.

Quay section 5.3a and 6.1

On the north side of the Hawiksdijkje, soil backfilling will take place on the crest of the dike. At occasional locations, soil backfill is required on the inner embankment.

Quay section 7.3

To the east of Schermerhorn between Oosteinde and the N243, a soil addition will take place on the crest of the dike.

Quay section 8.1 and 8.2

On the Oostdijkje in Schermerhoorn/De Rijp/Westbeemster, soil replenishment is taking place on the crest of the dike.

Quay section 9.2

In the Rijp south of the N244 to the Zuiddijk, near Kamerhop pumping station, soil replenishment will take place on the crest of the dike.

When will the project take place and how long will it take?

The dike reinforcement will be carried out in phases, it is planned from 2025 to the end of 2027.

What does this mean for you?

We are currently in the tendering phase of the project. This means that in the coming period we will contract a contractor to carry out the work. We will then determine the order of the work with the contractor in question and make arrangements with residents to carry it out. We will inform stakeholders through this website, residents' letters and kitchen table discussions.
