Quay improvement Eilandspolder

HHNK assessed the dikes around the Eilandspolder in 2018/2019. Preparations for the improvement design of the dikes began in 2020. After conducting further research, it appears that approximately 8.5 kilometre meet safety standards.

To improve safety, soil fill will be added on top of the dike and on the inner berms at most locations. Customized solutions will be implemented at a number of locations. All these measures are in keeping with the original appearance of the area.

What's going to happen?

The map below shows where we will be carrying out dyke reinforcement work in the Eilandspolder. This is explained in more detail in the text below the map.

Quay section 1

For the dike at De Rijp/Oost-Grafdijk (near Zuiddijk/Kamerhop), we are adding soil to the inner slope and the inner berm. We are partially relocating the toe ditch to enable the addition of soil to the inner berm.

Quay section 3.1+3.2

At West-Graftdijk, near Kanaaldijk, the dike between the road and the drainage canal will be raised. At Noorderstraat, a small section of the current dike will be raised. Finally, at Oudelandsdijkje, a small amount of soil will be added to the inner berm.

Quay section 4.5f

In Driehuizen, the existing dike between the houses and the drainage canal is being raised. Customized solutions have been designed and discussed with the residents for this purpose.

Quay sections 5.1 and 5.2

In the rural area west of Grootschermer, the dike is being raised. In the village of Grootschermer near Noordeinde, a narrow strip of the reservoir is being filled in to make room for the raising and widening of the dike. HHNK, in collaboration with Landschap Noord-Holland, is compensating for the filling by creating a lake/wetland area from a nearby dry reed island. This will stimulate nature development in the area. At the Haviksdijkje on the west side of Grootschermer, the existing concrete structure is being raised.

Quay section 5.3a and 6.1

On the north side of the Haviksdijkje, soil is being added to the crest of the dike. At certain locations, soil needs to be added to the inner berm.

Quay section 7.3

East of Schermerhorn, between Oosteinde and the N243, soil is being added to the crest of the dike.

Quay sections 8.1 and 8.2

At Oostdijkje in Schermerhoorn/De Rijp/Westbeemster, soil is being added to the crest of the dike.

Quay section 9.2

In De Rijp, south of the N244 to the Zuiddijk, near the Kamerhop pumping station, soil is being added to the crest of the dike.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?

The dike reinforcement will be carried out in phases, starting in mid-October 2025 and lasting until early 2028.

Who do we work with?

The work will be carried out by contractor J.P. Schilder bv from Ursem.

We are making agreements with the municipality of Alkmaar to prevent traffic disruption during the execution of the work.

What does this mean for you?

During the work, the road will remain accessible as much as possible. Where residents, owners, and other parties involved in the project area may have their interests affected, discussions have been held to find the best possible solution for the area.

The contractor will make arrangements with residents regarding the implementation of these measures. Together with the contractor, we will inform stakeholders via this website, letters to residents, and, if desired, informal discussions.
