LoGiC - Low Carbon off Grid Communities
LoGiC's main goal is to develop a standard model for a renewable energy-based hybrid system. For LoGiC, this means that community and stakeholder involvement is the most important factor in the successful implementation of DHES. Therefore, we invite all parties in Europe to participate in our Logic Community of Practice (CoP). The CoP connects full-scale regions, private sector and other stakeholders who may be interested in joining the community. The goal is to establish three demonstration sites where DHES is operational: in the UK, NL and DE. The pilots will each highlight relevant aspects of DHES. The mission of the CoP will be to strengthen local support in Europe, serve as a sounding board for new projects and share knowledge for decentralized renewable energy in Europe. https://logic-dhes.eu/.
Name of grant program
INTERREG North West Europe (NWE) 2014-2020 promotes interregional cooperation to make North West Europe a strong economic player and an attractive and sustainable place to work and live characterized by a high level of innovation and strong cohesion.
The Interreg North-West Europe program is a transnational program. It focuses on participation of parties from seven countries. Parties from Switzerland (not a member of the EU) can also participate. In the Netherlands, it involves stimulating innovation and sustainable economic growth in the provinces of North Holland, South Holland, Utrecht, Flevoland, North Brabant, Overijssel, Gelderland, Zeeland and Limburg. The Program is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The ERDF budget for INTERREG NWE 2014-2020 is €396 million.
Project objectives
The project results from the three pilot projects form the basis for the project objectives. The LoGiC project will test, demonstrate and evaluate 3 DHES and develop a blueprint for further scale-up. Ten regions within Europe will be supported in implementing the blueprint. The consortium includes private parties (Tocardo and OGTC) and an industry umbrella (ARE) who all have a strong interest in further developing the DHES value chain. IfaS (university) and OGTC (test site) are developing the DHES model. Aquatera (research organization) will then support regions within Europe in implementation of the blueprint. Peer to peer mechanisms will be established between the three pilots and the regions. LoGiC focuses on "Energy Remoteness. This involves availability, quality and over cost of grid connections (power and gas).
Contribution from HHNK
The solar farm on Texel aligns with these goals and has been subsidized by Interreg North-West Europe because of its contribution to issues such as energy storage and grid connection.
Location
HHNK's activities take place on Texel.
Partners
The Low Carbon off Grid Communities has eight partners from four different member states (UK, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands):
- North Holland Development Corporation (NL)
- Hochschule Trier Institut für angewandtes Stoffstrommanagement - IfaS (DE)
- Offgrid Test Centre Foundation (OGTC, NL).
- Aquatera Ltd (UK)
- Alliance for Rural Electrification (BE)
- Verbandsgemeinde Birkenfeld (DE)
- Tocardo International BV (NL)
Budget
The total budget for the project is € 4.2 million. The contribution from HHNK is € 584,000. The Province of North Holland is subsidizing € 87,690 and Europe (Interreg) € 350,760.
Duration of the project
The project began on March 16, 2017, and is expected to run through March 15, 2020.
