What's going to happen?

The North Sea region is facing the consequences of climate change, such as rising sea levels, changing biodiversity, and an increase in tourism on sandy coasts. As a result, we will adapt our coastal management. The layout of our coastal area and the associated management and maintenance will therefore also change.

In response to this challenge, the Interreg North Sea- Program has launched the project: MAinstreaming NAture BAsed Solutions through COASTal systems (MANABAS COAST). Developing an accessible and experience-based framework for large-scale implementation of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in coastal areas. These NbS address the consequences of climate change while also offering benefits for human well-being and biodiversity.

Where is the project taking place?

Along the coast of North Holland and Texel, the water board monitors beaches and dunes using surveyors, drones, lidar, cameras, and citizen science. This monitoring contributes to a better understanding of the dynamics of beaches and dunes along our entire coastline. The goal of this project is to optimize this monitoring.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?

MANABAS COAST runs from October 1, 2022, to September 30, 2027.

Who do we work with?

The project is co-financed by the European Union and is a collaboration between various partners from Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, and France, who were also involved in the Building with Nature project.

Interreg

Building on the recent results of the INTERREG NSR Building with Nature project, MANABAS COAST aims to pave the way for the implementation of NbS in the North Sea region.

The Interreg North Sea-program is a European subsidy scheme for spatial and regional development. Parties from different countries collaborate on projects that fall under this Interreg scheme. The aim of thisprogramme to stimulate European cooperation, combat border barriers, and learn from each other.

Budget

The total budget for the HHNK project is approximately €298,000, of which 60% is co-financed by the European programme North Sea programme 2021-2027.
