Failed direct debit (reversal)

How it works

If it is not possible to debit the monthly amount, the direct debit will fail. This is called a reversal.
Reasons why a direct debit may fail:

  • Insufficient balance. The direct debits will resume the following month. If the direct debit fails again, we will stop the automatic collection. You will then have to pay the outstanding amount yourself.
  • The money has been debited, but you have withdrawn the instalment amount, in which case we will stop the direct debit after one failed attempt. You will then have to pay the outstanding amount yourself.
  • The bank account you are trying to collect from has been closed or blocked. In that case, we will stop the direct debit after one failed attempt. You will then have to pay the outstanding amount yourself.

In all cases, you will receive a letter about this.

Not sure why the payment failed? Check with your bank.

How do I change my account number for direct debit?

Change account number

Only one IBAN can be used for direct debit. If you change your account number, this change will apply to all your authorisations granted to the Tax and Customs Administration. It is not possible, for example, to have the purification levy debited from an IBAN other than the one from which the water board tax assessment is debited.

Change account number

By letter

Send your request to change the account number to:

Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board (HHNK)
Collection Team
Postbus
1700 AA Heerhugowaard.

Don't forget to include your subject number and account number in the letter.

Can I pay the tax assessment with iDEAL if I have a payment arrangement via direct debit?

You can pay the tax bill online via your own bank. Once we have received and processed your online payment, direct debit payments for this tax bill will be stopped.

The authorisation remains valid. Future assessments will therefore again be collected in instalments.
