Catching moles on the dike

Photo of a warning sign "Beware of mole traps."

During our dike inspections, we sometimes find that there are moles in the dike. Moles dig tunnels in our dikes, compromising the stability and safety of our flood defenses. If we do nothing about it, the mole tunnels could lead to a breach during high water.

Mole traps and information signs

To limit the damage caused by moles, we have hired a professional mole catcher. He places mole traps on the dikes where moles or mole tunnels have been spotted. These traps are temporary. We inform walkers about the placement of the mole traps by means of special information signs. These are placed at the same time as the traps and are also removed again. Therefore, please pay attention to the information signs and keep your dog on a leash to prevent accidents. No livestock grazes on the dikes where we place the traps and signs.

Food for owls

All moles caught are offered as food to a bird of prey keeper with owls. These are the only birds of prey that also see moles as food. The other birds of prey do not eat them. So we do not throw anything away.
