New podcast episode: From Cow to Water Buffalo
By 2100, we’ll be growing reeds and cattails in Noorderkwartier, and there won’t be any cows there anymore—just water buffalo.
That’s according to Steven Slabbers, a spatial development consultant, in the second episode, “ ,” of the HHNK podcast “Water voor Later.” In this podcast, experts discuss water management in Hollands Noorderkwartier.
“We are moving toward a new landscape in Noorderkwartier, and that is inevitable,” say Steven Slabbers, spatial development consultant, and Floor van Schie, strategic consultant at HHNK, in the second episode of the “Water for Later” podcast. Soon, we’ll be growing raw materials for construction here instead of flower bulbs, and water buffalo will roam here instead of cows.
A pipe dream?
This is certainly a glimpse into the future. But it’s going to happen, says Slabbers. By 2150, our landscape will look very different. And we shouldn’t be afraid of that, he argues. According to Van Schie, changing land use is a constant throughout history, and we need to approach it with an open mind. Both agree that this will be a profound change. Van Schie believes it is essential that this change be shaped in collaboration with those it affects. Van Schie is involved in the “Future Vision 2050+” that HHNK has developed. It will be open for public comment starting August 19.
