Draft HHNK Vision for the Future 2050+ Available for Public Review

The Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board (HHNK) has developed a new vision for the future. The draft “Vision for the Future 2050+: ‘Seeing Boundaries, Creating Space’” will be available for public review from August 19 through September 30, 2026. This vision will guide water management in the coming decades. It affects everyone. Residents, businesses, and organizations can provide feedback and submit their views.

Choices for the Future

The vision for the future outlines how HHNK, together with the surrounding community, intends to address major water-related challenges such as climate change, rising sea levels, increasing drought, and flooding.

Dijkgraaf Remco Bosma: “Together, we face decisions that we cannot put off. By managing water differently and more intelligently—both now and in the coming years—we can keep our region safe and livable.”

Water is becoming less and less of a given. It is no longer possible to prevent all risks everywhere, all the time. That is why HHNK is committed to managing water more intelligently, making clear choices, and collaborating with residents, businesses, and government agencies.

Water affects everyone

The vision for the future provides direction for water management in the coming decades. The choices outlined in the vision for the future address issues that affect everyone:

  • Water Safety – How Can We Protect Ourselves from Floods and Better Prepare for Them?
  • Sufficient Water—How Do We Deal with Drought and the Distribution of Fresh Water?
  • Healthy and Clean Water – How Do We Keep Our Water Clean and Suitable for People and Nature?
  • Collaboration – How can we ensure that we tackle these challenges together?

Only by working together can we ensure that our region remains safe, livable, and pleasant to live and work in for years to come.
