Start of the Fall Dike Inspection
We have begun the fall inspection. Through mid-October, we will be inspecting all primary flood defenses. These include the dikes along the Markermeer and IJsselmeer, as well as the dikes along the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. The dike along the North Sea Canal will also be inspected and repaired where necessary, so that the dikes are ready for storm season.
Fall Inspection with a Focus on Drought Damage
Arnold Langeveld, water board member at HHNK: “The drought inspections have just been completed, but storm season is already approaching again. That’s why we’re starting the annual fall inspection. This is an important part of our work to ensure that the dikes remain resilient against storms, heavy rain, and high water. This year, we’re paying extra attention to drought damage. A sturdy grass cover is important for the stability of our dikes, but prolonged drought can leave the grass cover in poor condition. We will be experiencing dry summers like this one more and more often. That is why it is important that we pay attention—now and in the future—to the effects of drought on the safety of our dikes.”
If damage is found, repairs will be carried out immediately
Working in pairs, the inspectors walk along the dikes to check for damage such as cracks, bare or wet spots, subsidence, and excavation holes. The inspectors pay special attention to signs of drought. If serious damage to the dikes is found, repairs are carried out immediately.
Fall Inspection Combined with Mowing Maintenance
The second round of mowing along the dikes has also begun and will continue through October 15. HHNK is responsible for mowing the dikes to ensure water safety: proper dike vegetation protects the dike and keeps the soil firmly bound together by the roots. In addition, mowing allows inspectors to better identify bare spots and other damage that must be repaired before storm season.
