Holding back sewage

Climate change is causing increasingly heavy rainfall. Because of these heavy rainstorms, there is also a greater chance of flooding. This may call for measures to better protect your home from flooding. One such measure is sewage backup.

What does stopping sewage entail?

Due to heavy rainfall, it happens that there is insufficient space in the sewer system to accommodate the large amounts of water. As a result, sewage can flow into the basement.

To prevent this, you can take measures:

  1. Install a check valve in the sewer line.
  2. Install a ball valve in the washer drain line.
  3. Place a valve in the sewer line that you close during heavy rains.
  4. Install a lower outlet point in the sewer system.
  5. Cover the scrub drain.

Cost

A plumber costs € 40 to € 60 per hour. A check valve costs € 40 to € 200. A ball valve costs € 10 to € 50. A slide for the sewer costs € 400 to € 700. A cover for the scrub pit costs € 250 to € 450.

Space use

These measures make sense when water flows into your home or basement through the sewer or toilet.

What do you need.

You need a plumber, or experience with this type of job.

Tips

Your specific situation determines which measure is the best solution. Measures 2, 3 and 5 require manual action prior to the nuisance. Measures 1 and 4 work automatically.
