Improve water system polders Eierland and Het Noorden

What will happen?

In order to properly facilitate agricultural land use in the Eierland polder and realize the ambitions for the De Roggesloot nature reserve, redevelopment of the Eierland polder was deemed necessary in 2002.

At the time, it was proposed to reroute the freshwater drainage route from the western "high water ditch" to the Eijerlands Canal, so that agriculture could benefit from the fresh water and Roggesloot would actually become saltier. At the same time, solutions to flooding were made by constructing water storage and smart weirs.

The existing situation lacks a number of weirs and culverts, which are necessary to maintain the different water levels in the Eierland polder.

To also put the Eijerlandskanaal drainage in order and allow the Eijerlandskanaal to function as a buffer for flooding, the culverts under Muyweg in the Eijerlandskanaal should be replaced with one larger navigation culvert.

A practical trial will also be set up for the Eierland and Het Noorden polders in which freshwater/salt dams will be placed in the existing water system. The purpose of the practical trial with several fresh water weirs in the Eierland and Het Noorden polders is to maintain and possibly even improve fresh water availability for the current agricultural function of these polders. The effects of the measures will be monitored for at least a year after construction, after which the results of the pilot will be reported.
