Improving the water system in the Eierland and Het Noorden polders

What's going to happen?

In order to properly facilitate agricultural land use in the Eierland polder and realize the ambitions for the De Roggesloot nature reserve, it was deemed necessary to redesign the Eierland polder in 2002.

At the time, it was proposed to reroute the freshwater drainage route from the western 'high water ditch' to the Eijerland Canal, so that agriculture could benefit from the freshwater and Roggesloot would become saltier. At the same time, solutions for flooding were found by constructing a water storage facility and smart weirs.

In the current situation, a number of weirs and culverts are missing, which are necessary to maintain the various water levels in the Eierland polder.

In order to improve drainage from the Eijerland Canal and enable it to function as a buffer against flooding, the culverts under the Muyweg in the Eijerland Canal need to be replaced by a single larger navigable culvert.

A practical trial is also being set up for the Eierland and Het Noorden polders, involving the installation of freshwater/saltwater barriers in the existing water system. The aim of the practical trial with multiple freshwater barriers in the Eierland and Het Noorden polders is to maintain and possibly even improve the availability of freshwater for the current agricultural function of these polders. The effects of the measures will be monitored for at least one year after construction, after which the results of the pilot will be reported.
