Improving storage basin dike De Gors-Vurige Staart

What will happen?

The review and reassessment revealed that the polder dike along Oudelandsdijkje in Purmerend and Molenpad near Ilpendam no longer meets the standard for inward stability. This means that the dike on the polder side is not strong enough and must therefore be improved. With the dike improvement, the current bicycle path will also be widened. By combining both projects, the surrounding area will only be burdened once.

Where does the project take place?

The route to be improved is located near the Gors neighborhood in Purmerend and along the Vurige Staart polder and stops at Ilpendam. The total length of the section is approximately 4 km.

Who do we work with?

The widening of the bike path arose from a co-option opportunity brought in by the Transport Region of Amsterdam. Together with this organization and the municipalities of Waterland and Purmerend, HHNK will work out and realize the widening.

What will be done and how long will it take?

Dike improvement

Along the Oudelandsdijkje near the Gors neighborhood, we will largely install shoring on the dike side and apply clay to the inside of the dike. The dike slope will become slightly more gentle. The dike will not be widened and the dike ditch will not be moved.

Near the Fiery Tail polder, we are moving the dike ditch. The current ditch will be filled. Clay will be applied to the embankment and lower verge.

Afterwards, everything will be neatly re-seeded with grass seed.

Much of the work is performed by electrical equipment.

Bike path

The current bike path is located on the Oudelandsdijkje in the municipalities of Purmerend and Waterland. To make it user-friendly and safer, HHNK is tackling the bike path in cooperation with both municipalities and Transport Region Amsterdam.

Impression bicycle and footpath

The present bike path will be widened to 4.2 m wide from Oudelandsdijkje 3 Purmerend to Molenpad 8 Ilpendam (end of bike path) and executed in black asphalt. This will bring the bike path and footpath up to current standards and safety requirements. Lines on the black asphalt will separate the two parts.

Oudelandsdijkje from number 3 to Purmerweg will have a new asphalt layer and new lines. The bike path will not be widened on this section.

Permits

Permits have been obtained for the dike improvement and widening of the bicycle/footpath.

Planning

The work will be carried out from October 2024 to September 2025. Work on the dike will take place first, followed by work on the bicycle/footpath.

Current changes in planning and execution are tracked on this page and in the Construction App. You can download this app from the app store using the QR code. It allows you to follow construction projects in your area.

Nuisance

During the implementation period, adjacent residents may experience inconvenience. We try to limit this but cannot eliminate it. If there is a lot of dust, spraying will be used. Vibration meters will be installed at various homes on the Oudelandsdijkje. As soon as vibrations exceed the limits, work will be stopped.

The Oudelandsdijkje will be closed from IJsselmeerlaan Purmerend to Molenpad 8 Ilpendam from January to August 2025.

The Oudelandsdijkje section from IJsselmeerlaan Purmerend to Purmerweg will be closed from the end of May until August 2025.

A detour route will be established. In mid-December 2024, the closure will be indicated via signage in advance. Residents on Oudelandsdijkje will be approached to make arrangements about accessibility, parking, garbage, parcel delivery, etc.

Working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 am - 5:00 pm.

What policy underlies the project?

The Water Board takes care of the dikes in North Holland. We regularly check whether the dikes are still safe. Because of climate change - it rains harder and longer - the checks and requirements have been tightened. As a result, a large part of the dike around the polder no longer met the set height and stability requirements. To keep our feet dry now and in the future, we are improving the dike where necessary. After the work, the dike will be in order for the next 20 years.
