Improvement of the Zeevang polder embankment

Following the latest round of inspections, the dikes have been found to fall below the established standard. The standard determines the maximum permissible risk of a dike breaching. In order to guarantee water safety in the future, it is necessary to reinforce the dike.

What's going to happen?

The embankment around the Zeevang polder is being improved. The planning phase is largely complete. The polder has been divided into several sub-areas.

Where is the project taking place?

The reinforcements are being carried out along the embankment of the Purmerringvaart, the Where, the Beemsterringvaart, and the Uitwatering van Kennemerland (the Korsloot). The attached map shows the section layout of the entire project, from Edam towards Purmerend and from there along Kwadijk and Hobrede to Oosthuizen.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?

The project is divided geographically into subprojects for each subarea. The project team is working on the assignment for each subarea. Here is a brief summary of the current status for each subarea: 

Subarea 1 Zeevangsdijkje 

The levee was deemed non-compliant in part due to its height and in part due to the macro-stability of its inner slope. In a number of sections, the levee was deemed non-compliant on both counts. The design involves relocating ditches in some places, raising the levee, installing structures, and raising the Zeevangsdijkje. 

Preparatory work will begin on August 11. This will involve installing toad screens along the Edammerdijkje. On August 17, contractor AW Infrabouw will begin work on the dike reinforcement. This work is being carried out on behalf of HHNK.

The work will start in Edam and then proceed along the Zeevangdijkje and Edammerdijkje toward Purmerend.

Work

• work on the inner slope (landward side of the dike);
• relocating the toe ditch—the ditch that runs along the base of the dike;
• Installing new bank protection to protect the sides of the ditch from erosion and damage.

The road does not need to be closed for this work. However, you may experience some inconvenience or brief delays during soil transport.

Road Closure in 2027

Once work on the inner slope is complete, the crest of the dike will be raised between the Kwadijker Bridge and Axwijk. This work will require a complete road closure. According to the current schedule, this work will take place in the second quarter of 2027. Local residents and road users will be informed of this in a timely manner.

Subarea 2 Kogerdijk

In the fall of 2022, the inner dike of the Purmerringvaart was improved as the first section of the Zeevang polder. Additional soil was added to the dike on the side of the residential houses in the Wheermolen neighborhood.

Subarea 3 Westerdraaij

The embankment has been rejected at the height of the inner slope. The embankment is a task in soil (filling in sunken areas). These maintenance works will be carried out in 2026.  

Subarea 4 Westdijk

The barrier has been rejected on height grounds. The design for this section is currently being developed. It consists of raising the existing crest. The work will only take place on the existing quay. The design will be discussed with stakeholders in the coming months. 

Subarea 5 Hobrede/Westeinde

The barrier has been rejected on the basis of the height and macro stability of the inner slope. Various design variants are being developed for this section. The possibility of collaboration with the municipality of Edam-Volendam is also being investigated.

Subarea 6 Beetskoogdijkje

The embankment has been rejected on height. The design for this maintenance project has been finalized. It consists of raising the existing crest.  

Subarea 7 Korsloot/Westerkoogdijk

The barrier has been rejected on height grounds. The design for this maintenance project has been finalized. It consists of raising the existing crest. The work will take place on the existing quay.
