Improvement of the Zeevang polder embankment
Following the latest round of inspections, the dikes have been found to fall below the established standard. The standard determines the maximum permissible risk of a dike breaching. In order to guarantee water safety in the future, it is necessary to reinforce the dike.
What's going to happen?
The embankment around the Zeevang polder is being improved. Most of the project is currently in the planning phase. In this phase, we are identifying the parties involved and assessing the situation in the area. We are trying to involve as many stakeholders as possible at this stage, so that everyone can contribute ideas about the final result.
Where is the project taking place?
The reinforcements are taking place along the embankment of the Purmerringvaart, the Where, the Beemsterringvaart, and the Uitwatering van Kennemerland (the Korsloot). The attached map shows the section layout of the entire project, running from Edam towards Purmerend and from there along Kwadijk and Hobrede to Oosthuizen.

When will the project take place and how long will it last?
At the beginning of 2023, we spoke to many residents at residents' evenings and gathered a lot of wishes. The project team then started working on the preferred alternative (VKA) for two sub-areas (Zeevangsdijkje and Westerdraaij).
The project is divided geographically into subprojects for each subarea. The team is working on the assignment for each subarea. Here is a brief summary of the current status for each subarea:
Subarea 1 Zeevangsdijkje
The barrier has been rejected in part on the basis of height and in part on the basis of macro stability of the inner slope. On a number of sections, the barrier has been rejected on both counts.
The design, or preferred alternative, has been developed. This preferred alternative has been and is being discussed with residents along the route. The VKA consists of relocating ditches, raising the barrier, and installing structures.
The licence services and other permit applications will be published in the coming months.
Subarea 2 Kogerdijk
In the fall of 2022, the inner dike of the Purmerringvaart was improved as the first section of the Zeevang polder. Additional soil was added to the dike on the side of the residential houses in the Wheermolen neighborhood.
Subarea 3 Westerdraaij
The barrier has been rejected on the grounds of macro stability of the inner slope.
The design for this section is currently being developed and consists of digging a clay box on the outer side. The work will only take place on the existing quay.
The plan is to carry out this work in 2025.
Subarea 4 Westdijk
The barrier has been rejected on height grounds.
The design for this section is currently being developed and involves raising the existing crest. The work will only take place on the existing quay.
The design will be discussed with stakeholders in the coming months.
Subarea 5 Hobrede/Westeinde
The embankment has been rejected on the basis of the height and macro stability of the inner slope.
Various design variants are being developed for this section.
The design will be discussed with stakeholders in the coming months.
Subarea 6 Beetskoogdijkje
The barrier has been rejected on height grounds.
The design for this section is currently being developed and involves raising the existing crest. The work will only take place on the existing quay.
The design will be discussed with stakeholders in the first quarter of 2025.
Subarea 7 Korsloot/Westerkoogdijk
The barrier has been rejected on height grounds.
The design for this section is currently being developed and involves raising the existing crest. The work will only take place on the existing quay.
The design will be discussed with stakeholders in the first quarter of 2025.
Conditioning studies
In the coming period, we will be conducting additional (ground-breaking) investigations to gain a detailed picture of the local situation. These investigations may include surveying, archaeological research, and environmental soil testing. If we need to visit your property, we will inform you separately.
Who do we work with?
Throughout the Zeevang project, we are working together with the municipalities of Edam-Volendam and Purmerend, the Province of North Holland, and other interest groups and stakeholders.
