Prohibition: what you need to know

Certain activities may be prohibited within our management area. This applies to activities that, under specific circumstances or in specific locations, have a significant negative impact on water safety, water quantity, or water quality. On this page, you can read about what a prohibition entails, which activities it may apply to, and what you can do if you are faced with a prohibition.

What is a ban?

A ban means that a certain activity may not be carried out. This may be because:

  • the activity is not permitted at a specific location, or
  • the activity is prohibited under certain circumstances.

No exceptions can be made to a ban, even with a licence custom prescription.

When can a ban take effect?

The water board has currently imposed a ban in only a limited number of cases. Examples of activities subject to a ban:

  • Commercial discharges of domestic wastewater: In specific waters, a discharge ban applies in order to protect water quality.
  • Groundwater extraction for other purposes: In vulnerable groundwater areas, extraction is prohibited in order to protect the water balance.

These prohibitions have been put in place to prevent serious risks to water quality, water safety, and water quantity.

License check

We recommend always checking the Permit Check . This allows you to check whether a prohibition applies to your situation and which other rules apply.

What can I do if I am banned?

If you are faced with a ban, it is wise to investigate why the ban applies. Possible solutions are:

  • Change location: Consider performing the activity at a different location.
  • Change circumstances: Investigate whether the activity is possible under modified circumstances.
