Traffic exemption

An RVV exemption is a written authorisation use a road that is normally prohibited. Sometimes there is a no-entry restriction. And sometimes there is a maximum width (width restriction) or maximum weight (axle load restriction). These restrictions apply because the road is not safe enough, not wide enough, or cannot bear the weight. RVV stands for Reglement Verkeersregels en Verkeerstekens(Traffic Regulations and Traffic Signs). You can apply for an exemption from the road authority. If we are the road authority, you will need an exemption from us.

Terms and Conditions

Who is eligible for an RVV exemption?

  • Emergency and rescue services (ambulance, fire department, police, general practitioner, veterinarian);
  • Residents and owners of properties on the road in question;
  • Employees of companies located on the road in question;
  • Postal workers and home care workers;
  • Road users with a demonstrable destination.

Would you like to exceed a width or axle load restriction? Please consult with the Roads cluster first to see if this is possible. You can do this via the contact form or by telephone: 072 582 8282. Provide a map with the route and state the width and/or weight of the vehicle.

Fees

We charge a fee for processing the application. Fixed rates apply for using a road in deviation from a traffic decision. See the Fees page.

Is it about an exemption from a driving ban? Then we do not charge any costs to residents, owners, and users of adjacent land, emergency services, and the like.

How long does the processing take?

We will process your application within eight weeks. If additional information is required, we may extend this period. In that case, we will contact you.

Regulations

The Keur, the General Rules of the Keur, and the Policy Rules for Water Permits apply. See the Downloads and Links page.

Frequently asked questions

I have sold my car. Is my RVV exemption still valid?

Does the exemption apply to multiple cars? If so, then yes. Does the exemption apply to a single car? If so, then no. Report the sale via the contact form. We will remove the license plate number from the exemption. And we will note your new license plate number, if applicable.

I only want to drive on a road where there is a ban once. Is this allowed without an exemption?

No. You will still need an exemption. Indicate in your application that it concerns a single trip. Also state the date of the trip.

Can I obtain an exemption from all restrictions on all roads in the area?

No, that would render all prohibitions meaningless. You must specify for which roads you need an exemption and why. Exemptions cannot be granted for all roads.
