Replacement of pressure pipe in Volendam
What's going to happen?
In the municipality of Edam-Volendam and a small part of the municipality of Waterland, the existing sewage pressure pipe from the Volendam sewage pumping station to the Katwoude sewage treatment plant (STP) is being replaced and the discharge capacity is being increased.
Inspections have determined that the existing sewage pressure pipe has reached the end of its technical lifespan. In consultation with the municipality of Edam-Volendam, it has been decided to abandon the route of the current pressure pipe and find a new route, as much as possible on municipal land. The existing pipe is currently located mostly in residents' gardens and partly even under trees. A new route will limit the nuisance to the surrounding area.
The new pressure pipe from Booster Edam and the future Baanstee Noord pressure pipe will connect to the new Volendam-Katwoude wastewater treatment plant pressure pipe. The existing connections will be transferred to the new pressure pipe. These are the pressure pipe from the Slobbeland recreation center, the pressure pipe from the Alida Hoeve cheese farm, and the pressure pipe from Hotel Volendam (Motel Katwoude). In the future, the new Lange Weeren development will also be connected.
In the image below, the existing pressure pipe is marked in yellow. The new pressure pipe is marked in light brown. Here is also an image of the new pressure pipe in Google Earth.

Construction method
The new pressure pipeline will largely be laid using horizontal directional drilling (HDD). HDD allows a pipeline to be laid underground over a longer distance from two points. The deep location means that any obstacles can be passed without hindrance and nuisance to the surrounding area is limited. This method means that the water board only needs to set up work sites in a few places. The HDD installation equipment will be set up within these work sites.
Planning
The project will be carried out in two phases. In 2023, we will have completed the construction of the Volendam sewage pumping station to the Zeddeweg water storage facility. In 2024, the section from the Zeddeweg water storage facility to the Katwoude wastewater treatment plant will follow.
Other developments
Research is currently underway to determine whether we can start using sewer heat recovery. This involves recovering heat from sewage water, which can then be used to heat homes. HHNK is conducting this research in collaboration with the municipality of Edam-Volendam.
