Spring check on the use of antifouling
We are starting to monitor and educate private boat owners on the proper use of antifouling (antifouling paint). The goal is to reduce the amount of harmful substances such as zinc and copper entering surface water.
Boating season is upon us. Boat owners prepare their vessels again and often apply a fresh coat of paint to the underside of the boat. However, preventing algae, weed and shell growth on the hull can be more environmentally friendly. Antifouling contains many heavy metals and some agents are even banned in the Netherlands.
Cleaner water
We want these controls to inform consumers about the impact that the copper compound or zinc (biocides) in paint has on the aquatic environment and health. If misused and inadequately protected, the paint can also have harmful effects on the health of the person applying it. "Improving water quality requires a concerted effort by governments, businesses and residents. When maintaining their boat, owners make a difference. Together we ensure that the water in North Holland becomes cleaner," said high water board member Jos Beemsterboer.
Minimal use of antifouling
The best thing for the water environment is to use as little antifouling as possible. If sailing behavior, mooring and cruising area permit, the choice of paint with fewer biocides is a logical one for man and nature. For example, there is paint that facilitates cleaning the underside of the boat (non-stick coatings) or a hard paint, e.g. epoxy-based, that can be brushed without damage.
Permitted resources in the Netherlands
Unfortunately, many banned substances can be purchased online. This is because the requirements differ within Europe. In the Netherlands, antifoulants must be approved by the College toelating gewasbeschermingsmiddelen en biociden (Ctgb). If you use a product that is not approved by the Ctgb for pleasure craft, you are in violation and risk a fine. The applied layer of antifouling must also be removed from the boat. For more information, see the Antifouling page.
