Water-absorbing bags

Climate change is causing increasingly heavy rainfall. Because of these heavy rainstorms, there is also a greater chance of flooding. This may call for measures to better protect your home from flooding. One such measure is placing water-absorbing bags in front of doors and other passages.

What is a water-absorbing bag?

Water-absorbent bags, blankets and mats provide quick and effective protection from sudden rising water. A water-absorbent bag is also called sand bag without sand. A water-absorbing bag quickly absorbs water and swells evenly. Thus, a solid barrier against water flooding forms within minutes. You can place them in front of a door or use them to build a wall or dike.

Cost

Water absorbent bags are available in different shapes and sizes. Prices range from about €12 to €80 per bag.

Space use

This measure makes sense if water flows into your home through the front or back door, the cuckoo, a door or other opening on the first floor, into the basement, or into the garage under the house.

Tips

Water absorbent bags are light, easy to store and take up little space. Especially compared to a filled sandbag, for example. A water-absorbent bag is filled with water within minutes and therefore ready for use quickly. However, keep in mind that a water-absorbing bag needs space to fill itself. Moreover, a water-absorbing bag can usually only be used once.
