Installing water-retaining bulkheads

Climate change is causing increasingly heavy rainfall. These heavy rains also increase the risk of flooding. This may require measures to better protect your home against flooding. One such measure is to manually install water barriers for passageways.

What are temporary partitions?

These are water-resistant barriers that you can install yourself in front of a passageway such as a door. These barriers prevent water from flowing through the passageway and into your home. Such barriers are also known as flood protection and flood barriers.

Water barriers come in various shapes and sizes. Many barriers are secured with a click system or can be completely dismantled. You place these barriers before flooding occurs.

Costs

There are many types and sizes of water barriers, and prices vary. A barrier measuring one metre is available from around €700.

Use of space

This measure is useful if water enters your home through the front or back door, the skylight, a door or other opening on the ground floor, the basement, or the garage under the house.

What do you need?

Preferably work with an installer who specializes in installing water barriers.

Tips

When searching online, it is best to use terms such as water barriers, flood protection, or flood barriers. You can install small barriers yourself by hand. To install large barriers, you will need several people. When the barriers are not in use, you will need to store them, so you will need storage space. The mounting points are often permanently attached to the house.
