Water Treasure
The masterpieces from the water heritage collection can be admired in the permanent exhibition Waterschat. During office hours, this exhibition can be viewed in the hall of our central office at Stationsplein 136 in Heerhugowaard.
An accompanying free audio tour highlights various objects. Listen in and learn about the pile worm, a tropical borer mussel that attacked wood in sea dikes in the 18th century. Heavy poles and beams were totally punctured and broke like matchsticks. Or the legend of the Purmer seawoman. During a heavy storm in the year 1403, the sea dike broke and the sea-wife washed into the Purmer via the breach from the Zuiderzee. Edam milkmaids caught her and taught her to spin. The enormous wall map of the surveyor Johannes Dou from 1680 also appears in the audio tour. It took him sixteen years to accurately Map all of North Holland. Still today, his survey map is of great importance.
