Water safety: task to 2035 determined

Based on the additional soil and building research, we were able to sharpen the assumptions for calculating the water safety of the dike in Durgerdam. The tightening of the starting points is closely related to the temporary nature of the task: at this moment the task is determined until 2035.

Brief explanation statement

For the eastern part of the village (from the chapel), this means that the dike meets the legal lower limit* until 2035. For the western part of the village, the dike is just not high enough everywhere (a task of 10-20 cm over a limited length). To solve this height deficit there are several measures that can be applied, for example:

  • Temporary flood measures (sandbags, applying tarp), or
  • Permanent measures such as locally raising the tumble dam.

We are currently researching and weighing which measures are the best fit for Westeinde. Once we have this survey complete it will be shared with all residents.

Good to know

This tightened task involves accepting more water over the dike. This means that in times of high water there may be more flooding. At a later date we will discuss in detail the starting points, their consequences and the proposed measures for the period up to 2035. After 2035 a (major) task for water safety may follow. This will be assessed in the review round of 2035 with the knowledge and standards of that time.

*The lower limit indicates the maximum permissible failure probability for a water barrier, which corresponds to the relevant signal value of the barrier. For more information see www.hwbp.nl.
