Water safety: targets set until 2035

Based on the additional soil and building research, we have been able to significantly refine the principles for calculating the water safety of the dike in Durgerdam. Refining the principles is closely related to the temporary nature of the task: at present, the task has been set until 2035.

Brief explanation of assignment

For the eastern part of the village (from the chapel), this means that the dike will meet the legal minimum height* until 2035. For the western part of the village, the dike is not quite high enough everywhere (a shortfall of 10-20 cm over a limited length). To solve this height deficit, there are various measures you can take, for example:

  • Temporary measures in case of high water (sandbags, installation of tarpaulins), or
  • Permanent measures such as locally raising the tumble quay.

We are currently investigating and considering which measures are most suitable for Westeinde. Once we have completed this overview, it will be shared with all residents.

Good to know

This stricter requirement means that more water will be allowed to flow over the dike. This means that there may be more flooding during periods of high water. At a later stage, we will discuss the principles, the consequences, and the proposed measures for the period up to and including 2035 in detail. After 2035, there may be a (major) challenge for water safety. This will be assessed in the 2035 review round using the knowledge and standards available at that time.

*Thelower limitrepresents the maximum permissible failure probability for a flood defense, which corresponds to the relevant warning value for the defense. For more information, visit www.hwbp.nl.
