Fickle weather slows drought in Hollands Noorderkwartier
Over the past few weeks, we have had variable weather in the Netherlands. The rain has slowed the drought in our area, but not yet resolved it for now. Thanks to the rain, the precipitation deficit has not increased as much as before. The precipitation deficit is the difference between expected evaporation and measured precipitation. The top layer of dikes does remain drier than usual during summer periods. Sunny and dry weather is expected in the coming weeks. Therefore, we remain alert for drought. Our employees in the field keep a close eye on whether drought causes damage to dikes. We adjust the water level in ditches and lakes where necessary and possible. Thanks to the water supply from the IJsselmeer and Markermeer lakes, there is currently sufficient fresh water available in our area.
