View of the coast: privacy issues

The camera images are used exclusively for scientific research. In doing so, the privacy of filmed passers-by is guaranteed.

Privacy and data access

Privacy data access is made in accordance with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (AVG). For this, the following points are important. A Data Protection Impact Assessment has also been made.

Data retention periods

The research project will last four years (2022-2025). External parties (companies and universities) are also used to answer the research questions, process the data and maintain the system. Separate agreements will be made with these. The video data will be kept until all projects surrounding the research project have been concluded and all research questions have been answered. At the conclusion of the projects, the Water Board decides how the data will continue to be kept (e.g., anonymized) or destroyed.

Camera images will not be recorded continuously. Depending on the requirements of the investigation, single camera images will be stored several times per hour. During certain periods (e.g. during large sand movements), short clips of several minutes will be stored.

Access images to third parties

The camera images are not publicly available. All images are collected and stored centrally at the Water Board. Only authorized persons are allowed to work with the data. These are persons who are responsible for maintaining the system or persons who need the data for the various investigations. Access will be regulated in the agreements with various parties where the rights and obligations with respect to the data will be defined. The declarations will be worked out at a later stage.

Within science, it is standard practice to make portions of research data publicly available. These portions of the data are anonymized.

Inspection request

For inspection of the images by third parties (i.e. persons/parties not involved in the project/investigations), a request must be submitted to the Water Board. In the assessment, the regulations of the Personal Data Authority are observed.
