General rules: what you need to know

General rules apply to certain activities within our working area. You do not have to ask permission from the district water board. The general rules are there to ensure safe, clean and sufficient water. On this page you can read when general rules may apply, how you can check whether your activity falls under them and what your responsibilities are.

Want to know more about certain activities subject to general rules? Then visit our information pages on activities.

What are general rules?

General rules are Requirements from the Water Board Ordinance. They apply to certain activities without you needing permission first. By complying with these rules, you contribute to maintaining water quality, water safety and a properly functioning water system.

Examples of activities with general rules:

  • Place or remove trees and groves near waterways.
  • Placing structures near waterways
  • Scattering ashes of a deceased person on water.

Duty to inform

General rules often apply in conjunction with a duty to inform. See the page Duty to inform: what you need to know.

What are general rules about?

General rules apply to activities that affect the water system. For example, maintaining ditches, placing small structures or the temporary use of water. They ensure that you can work safely and responsibly without disturbing the water system.

How do I know if general rules apply?

To determine whether general rules apply to your situation, you can do the Permit Check through the Environment Desk. This provides an overview of what applies to your activity.

What general rules apply?

Which general rules apply to your situation can be found on our activity information pages or at Tailor-made measures in the Environment Counter.

What are my responsibilities in situations with general rules?

Although you do not need permission, you remain responsible for the consequences of your activity. This means that you:

  • carry out the activity safely, without causing risks to water quality, water quantity or water safety;
  • the State Water Board asks for customized regulations if your activity (in part) does not comply with the general rules;
  • modify or discontinue the activity if it does turn out to have negative effects.

Permission to use property

Is the location where you perform the activity (partially) owned by someone else? Then you need private permission from the (co-)owner. If that (co-)owner is the Water Board, please contact the Land Use Team via our contact form or via our general telephone number 072 582 8282

Water Board land properties can be found on this Map:
