Dredging and Reed Removal in the Waterways of Wieringermeer
What's going to happen?
Commissioned by the Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Board (HHNK), contractor Jimmink Kolhorn of Barsingerhorn will be carrying out maintenance work on various waterways in the eastern part of the Wieringermeer starting in mid-July.
Where is the project taking place?
The work area is bounded by the A7 highway, the Robbenoordbos, the IJsselmeer, and the N240 provincial road. The blue lines on the map below indicate the waterways where work is being carried out.

What are we going to do?
To ensure that water can continue to flow in and out, we are removing accumulated sediment and excess reeds from a number of waterways. This will restore the waterways to their desired profile. To achieve this, we are carrying out the following work:
- Mowing approximately 30 hectares of reeds;
- Removal and disposal of what is known as “reed litter” (a layer approximately 25 centimeters thick consisting mainly of reed roots);
- Removal of approximately 130,000 m³ of dredged sediment.
The reed cuttings generated—totaling approximately 22 hectares / 55,000 m³—will be removed and reused as composting material and for nature restoration. The dredged sediment will be spread and leveled on the adjacent banks. In total, approximately 35, kilometre s of waterway will be treated.
Planning
The work will be carried out in two phases and will span a period of two years:
- Phase 1: Mid-July 2026 through mid-March 2027
- Phase 2: Mid-July 2027 through mid-March 2028
The work will be completed before the start of the breeding season. In the first year of work, one side of the waterway will be addressed. In the following year, the opposite side will be mowed, weeded, and dredged. This will preserve the ecological value of the waterways.
Who do we work with?
Mr. Remco ter Horst of Ingenieursbureau Niebeek is responsible for the day-to- supervision ing of the work.
