Coupure Den Oever

In 2018, the coupure was built as part of the strengthening of Den Oever harbor dike. This dike reinforcement was part of the High Water Protection Program (HWBP). The coupure in Den Oever is the connection between the village and the harbor area. At high tide, the coupure is closed by means of two sets of wooden doors. In recent years a number of improvement points have emerged regarding traffic safety and closing the coupure at high water. To improve traffic safety and make it easier to close the coupure during a crisis situation at high water, we are carrying out a number of activities. Due to unforeseen circumstances the work will extend until Friday, April 11.

What will happen?

The plastic shims lying on the floor of the coupure were slippery and shifted frequently. This allowed cyclists to slip and fall, sometimes with unpleasant consequences. In addition, our crisis management organization was inconvenienced by the shims. They were difficult to remove when the wooden doors had to be closed during a high water situation.

To improve this, the wooden doors, pivots and concrete floor have been modified recently (see photos below). To make the doors waterproof at the bottom, a sealing device must be installed. Once this provision has been installed, we will test the doors for watertightness. Contractor Oosterhof Holman will perform the remaining work in the period from Monday, April 7 to Friday, April 11 (between 07:00 and 16:00).

Due to the safety of road users and contractor employees, the coupure will remain closed to all traffic during the work. The closure will be from Monday, April 7 to Friday, April 11 between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Traffic will be diverted via the Havenkade and Dokweg, and is indicated by signs (see illustration below). Emergency and emergency services will be personally informed of the closure. Transportation and most work will take place from the port side. There may be some inconvenience at certain times. We ask for your understanding for this.

Location of cutoff and detour

Water safety

To ensure water safety during the work, the temporary closure protocol is still in effect. If there is a chance of high water, the cutoff will be closed with a double barrier of aluminum bulkheads and an additional row of big bags (large sandbags) will be installed.

Where does the project take place?

The coupure is located on Zeestraat, towards the Havenkade.

When will the project take place and how long will it take?

During the period from Monday, April 7 to Friday, April 11 (between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m.), contractor Oosterhof Holman of Wieringerwerf will carry out the work on behalf of the Water Board.

Who do we work with?

The preparation of the work is in close contact with the municipality of Hollands Kroon. The municipality welcomes the modifications to the coupure because of the improved road safety.
