Information and participation

The Durgerdammerdijk is characterized by its narrow appearance with a pedestrian/bicycle path on the crest of the dike. In the core of Durgerdam, there is a sidewalk along the road and a footpath on the outside of the dike. The road lies at the foot of the dike. From the crest of the dike on the west side of the module outside the dike there is a view of the skyline of Amsterdam across the IJ, especially IJburg is close by. In this module, the foreland of the IJdoorn polder is at its widest, with the lighthouse island behind it. The lighthouse island acts as a clearly recognizable landmark, especially from the water.

Inside the dike is Durgerdam, with a dense ribbon of buildings right on the Markermeer dike. The little church of Durgerdam is recognizable from afar; it is centrally located in the ribbon outside the dike, close to the marina. From the houses of Durgerdam there is a full view over the IJmeer, the marina and the (foothills of) the IJdoorn polder. The village is also recognizable from the water; it is a protected village sight. The road here lies on the dike. The entire dike is a provincial monument.

In early 2019, after an intensive participation process, the Integral Spatial Program Durgerdam (IRP) was signed by the board of HHNK, Province of North Holland, municipality of Amsterdam, Central Village Council Rural North and Village Council Durgerdam. The IRP is an outline design. This document contains starting points for the further elaboration of formal plans for the dike reinforcement and the design of the public space. These include principles and preferred directions; some of the preconditions are laid down in bandwidths. The Integral Spatial Program serves as the basis for the formal plans.

In 2019 and 2020, a lot of behind-the-scenes (computational) work was done and discussed mainly with the technical group, village council and public space working group. In late 2020, the deformation working group was added. In 2021, the process will continue.
