New construction and expansion of De Hoelm pumping station
What's going to happen?
Through periodic maintenance in the pumping station program, we ensure that the existing pumping stations and water level control weirs remain in good condition. This maximizes the availability of these crucial water management structures and minimizes disruptions. Three projects from the pumping station program have been selected from the programme : De Hoelm, De Vurige Staart, and Marken. When major maintenance is required on a structure, the existing pumping stations and weirs take extra measures to further increase protection against flooding. This allows us to strengthen the water system while keeping costs down.
Where is the project taking place?
This collaboration includes two more projects.
- Purmerend – expansion of De Vurige Staart pumping station
- Marken – water level monitoring and area regulation (completed)

When will the project take place and how long will it last?
The De Hoelm pumping station serves the Hoelmerkoog polder. The pumping station building dates from 1940. We have determined that the pumping station has reached the end of its technical service life. Therefore, it has been decided to replace the current pumping station with a new one. We are also replacing a number of weirs in the polder. These will be automated flap weirs. They will 'communicate' with the pumping station about local water levels in an area control system, so that water management in the area can be optimized. Finally, the pumping station will be equipped with a fish-friendly pump installation and a fish passage.
Construction began in 2022, and a mobile grinding installation was deployed to temporarily take over the drainage. Construction is in full swing and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024.
